Faster, Denser, Hotter: The Extremes of Neutron Stars
Neutron stars are a smorgasbord of physical extremes.
They pack the mass of a star in the size of a city, they can spin faster
than a kitchen blender, and they have magnetic fields so strong that even
atoms are stretched into thin cylinders. Study of neutron stars thus gives us
hints about the fundamental physics of matter under conditions of density, gravity,
and magnetic fields that cannot (and should not!) be reproduced in a laboratory.
I will discuss the history of thought and discovery of neutron stars, and highlight the present
and future discoveries about neutron stars expected from telescopes, satellites, and gravitational
wave detectors.
