Abstract
Bird migration and avian diversity is one of the most compelling and challenging problems of modern biology with important implications for human health and conservation biology. Migration and conservation efforts cross national boundaries and are subject to numerous international agreements and treaties. Public interest is high with concerns about avian flu, Katrina and its impacts, and the recent sightings of the ivory-billed woodpecker. But just exactly how can NASA help? Do we see birds from space? Do we need to? For a long time, I studied plants and looked at how NASA could help us understand the Earth's vegetation. One day I looked out at my wife's bird feeder, and said ... why not model birds? All of a sudden I realized I'd been looking at the world in black and white terms--but it's a technicolor world. Why not use space to study birds? My own knowledge migration had begun.
