Description: The mission of the Morgan State University/NASA Goddard Summer Institute of Robotics (SIR) is to increase the knowledge
and understanding of the concepts and principles of robotics for urban high school students with an interest in careers in science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
SIR plan to achieve the following objectives:
- To cultivate and sustain interest in STEM fields among students, especially urban students
- To create a pipeline of students that are qualified to participate in NASA internships, co-op, and other special programs
- To inspire and develop future robotics specialists
- To help address the urgent need for more STEM professionals
The SIR is a two, two week residential summer program designed to provide students with the opportunity to learn and
discover the science and technology of robot design and operation. In this program, high school students will learn:
- Introduction to Robotics
- Mechanical Platforms: Design and Physical Properties
- Microcontroller Systems
- Computer Science
- Presentation and Public Speaking Etiquette
Tentative Program Dates:
- First Session – June 24 to July 7
- Second Session – July 22 to August 4
Important Information:
- We will be selecting 15 students for each session.
- Application information needs to be mailed to SIR by May 18.
- Students will receive notification of their acceptance or non-acceptance
to the program by June 1.
Staff
In addition to the internships above, the program also seeks to employ the following support staff:
- Robotics Coordinator (1 position) – plans and manages all robotics activities (graduate, undergraduate, graduating senior with
robotics experience)
- Robotic Leads (4 positions) – works with small group of high school students as they work with vex robots (undergraduate, graduating
senior, and raising seniors with robotics experience)
- Robotics Instructor (1 position) – lecture on basic robotics principles (instructor, graduate, undergraduate, graduating senior
